Roshomon in England

Dividing Line

Another HHS colleague, Dale Stahl, wrote with this intriguing tidbit. We should all think good thoughts about him because he may be following in the footsteps of Kris and Jeff Wedding Crowell. Kris has a dream job teaching physics at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Jeff has a dream job creating things at Sandia National Laboratories' California location. Lots of frequent flyer miles accumulate while they decide how to organize their lives. Meanwhile, the company at which Dale's wife is an executive was just bought out by a Palo Alto, California company. She will probably soon be commuting long distance while she and Dale decide how to organize their lives.

Here's what Dale wrote:

If you get the chance, read An Instance of The Fingerpost by Iain Pears.

This is a really interesting historical mystery set in England just after the Restoration. There is much political intrigue and religious discussion and an excellent illustration of the rights and privileges of different social classes. The author uses several historic figures and weaves the discoveries or areas of expertise of each into the story. The mystery itself is especially intriguing, in that he tells the same story from the perspective of four different characters.

What you believe to be true from one is viewed differently from the others, and a bit more detail and knowledge is revealed with each section.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book for the historic setting and information provided, as well as the uniquely crafted mystery.

Let me know what you think!"
