I have read a number of good books this summer and want to put something more formal together for Reading, but a quick note on my favorite so far: The Emperor of Ocean Park. Fabulous book by Stephen L. Carter, a law professor at Yale. A fiction work that primarily deals with a mystery as well as a legacy left by a judge that was once nominated to the Supreme Court, but did not make it through the Senate confirmation hearings. The author is a man with brown skin, and his protagonist often discourses on the different experiences of those that are members of the 'darker nation.' It's reminiscent of Easy Rawlings (Walter Mosley's character), except at a different level of society, and minus the attendant violence of day to day living. The mystery revolves around a chess problem which is also extremely interesting. Finally, the author does a wonderful job of drawing us into his character's family and professional ife as well. I highly recommend it. |
Thank you, Dale. We're now expecting an account of those "good books" from last summer. And you thought book reports ended when you graduated from high school up there in Procter, MN.
Write Tell a little bit of the world what you think.
