The English Foxhound (148th place with the AKC registration) only had 38 dogs registered in 2002 compared to the most popular breed, the Labrador Retriever with 154,616 dogs registered. The American Foxhound is slightly ahead in 143rd place with 68. This is in comparison to our other breed, the Beagle who with 44,670 registrations is in 4th place. This is why, if you have been looking for a English Foxhound, you may have found that they are very hard to come by.

The English Foxhound is a well balanced dog standing 23 to 25 inches and weighing between 65 to 95 pounds.  They have a smooth dense coat, of any hound color, black-tan-white being the most common.  Most people remark, "they look just like a big beagle".

This breed needs a lot of exercise, as they were bred to run with horses and follow the fox. A fenced yard (large if possible) is almost a must, to keep this curious hound safe at home.  They enjoy taking part in any family activity and do like to be the "house dog".

Training should begin at an early age, we strongly  recommend that you take your foxhound to a puppy obedience class.  As with any animal, continued training at home is a must.  We have found that our dogs enjoy obedience and agility training.
