Faith Development

Baptismal Instruction
Our Church provides classes to help assist parents in their spiritual preparation for their child to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. Time commitment is approximately one hour per class. Classes are held every two to three months.

Parish School of Religion (PSR)
PSR helps children to learn and understand Jesus Christ and our Catholic Faith. PSR volunteers are needed as teachers and teacher aides and should have a love for children and sharing their faith. Classes are held at various times and days. Pre-K to 8th grade meet at 9:00 a.m. Sunday mornings and Confirmation Class (9th Grade) meets on Sunday evenings at 6:30 p.m. Grades 10 to 12 are combined through clustering with St. Francis and the Newman Center. Classes are held on four Sundays during the school year at Saint Francis from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Time commitment for volunteers is one year, three to four hours per week from September through April.

Vacation Bible School (VBS)
VBS is a weeklong bible school held in the month of June from 9:00 a.m. to noon and is open to all children ages 3 to 9 years old. Children 10 and older may participate as helpers. Volunteers are needed to coordinate registration, organize snacks, coordinate and assist with crafts, and serve as teachers or teacher aides. Planning time required in addition to implementing program-approximately one hour per day.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
Classes are held in the KC Hall basement at 9:00 a.m. most Sunday mornings from mid-September to the end of April. Volunteers are needed to help teach and to share their faith journey with newcomers and welcome them into our parish family. Team members devote approximately two hours per month giving presentations about various topics to candidates and catechumens. Sponsors are needed every year for each RCIA participant. Sponsors spend approximately one to two hours each week attending class and sometimes Mass with the participants.

Pre Cana
Pre Cana experience is typically required prior to being married in the Church. The program is held on one Saturday session, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (approximately). Sessions consist of several guest speakers on different aspects of marriage and time to share with other engaged couples on the topics. There are several opportunities to attend a session throughout the year, primarily in the spring and summer months. Volunteer presenters are especially welcome.

Adult Catechism Class
A video series featuring Fr. John Corapi is used to teach this class. Viewings are followed by group discussion, with the goal of an in-depth presentation of The Catechism of the Catholic Church. Class meets on Sunday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Participants may come for one or all of the sessions. The classes are offered in two sessions: January through May and September through November.

Catholic Ed for Adults
This is an informative program in which Catholics over the age of 18 can learn and discuss what the Catholic Church teaches and the foundation for those teachings. Various topics chosen by those attending the program are discussed each year. The group meets on Wednesdays twice per month at the parish rectory from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Cursillo
Cursillo is a Spanish word meaning "short course." It begins on a Thursday evening and ends the following Sunday night. During the three days those attending live and work together, listen to talks given by priests and laity, share the Eucharist and pray together. Cursillos are held in Saint Louis twice a year and in DuBois once a year, with separate weekends for men and women.

Eucharistic Adoration
Eucharistic Adoration is held in the chapel at Saint Joseph Memorial Hospital the first Friday of each month from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sign-up sheets are available in church for the upcoming month to assure that the Eucharist will not be left unattended. Time commitment is flexible. Everyone, whether you sign up or not, is welcome to come for individual prayer during any part of the afternoon.

Rosary
Volunteers are needed to lead the praying of the Rosary before Mass. The Rosary is prayed before the 5:30 p.m. Saturday and 8:00 a.m. Sunday Masses. Volunteers are given a Rosary pamphlet containing the prayers.

First Friday Rehab Center Mass
Mass is held on the first Friday of each month at 10:30 a.m. at the Jackson County Rehab and Care Center in Murphysboro. It is announced in the bulletin under Mass Intentions for the week; occasionally the schedule varies. Volunteers are needed to help set up the altar for Mass, assist patients, and take Holy Communion to individuals unable to attend Mass. Time commitment is one to two hours per month.

The Blue Army
The Blue Army is also known as The World Apostolate of Fatima. They meet once a week for "Hours of Holiness". You are invited to join the Blue Army at Saint Joseph Memorial Hospital's chapel every Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. Meetings usually last one hour.

Prayer Network

Liturgy

Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist
Adults needed to assist the Celebrant in the distribution of the Body & Blood of Christ to the congregation (also to the homebound: see entry below). Training is provided. Time commitment varies depending on which Mass attended, number of other ministers, etc.

Lectors
Adults needed to proclaim God's word at Mass. Volunteers need to have the ability to speak in public and a willingness to prepare and practice the readings. A time commitment of one mass every couple of months is requested. Training is provided.

Mass Servers
Traditionally, young people are invited to assist the Celebrant with the liturgy as altar servers. Father Gary would like to extend this opportunity to interested adults as well. A time commitment of one to two hours per month is requested. Training provided.

Music
Opportunities include playing the piano, organ, guitar or other musical instrument, singing with the guitar group, KC's choir, or being a song leader at Mass. Training is provided. A separate choir is formed to sing and/or perform during Christmas and Easter services. Time commitment one to two hours a month with extra time required for practices for special services.

Ushers
Ushers assist by seating parishioners, collecting monetary offerings, organizing the Eucharistic procession, distributing bulletins and tidying up Church for the next Mass. A time commitment of approximately one hour every two to four months is requested.

Church Environment
Decorating the church for seasonal changes including Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, holy days, as well as ordinary time decorations. Time commitment varies with greatest commitment (four to six hours) needed at Christmas and Easter.

Nursery
Nursery is available during the 8:00 & 10:30 AM Masses in the Rectory Basement. Volunteers are needed to watch children during the these Masses to allow parents to attend Mass.

Parish Life & Organizations

Pastoral Council
The Pastoral Council is an advisory board that acts on behalf of the people of the parish to assist the pastor in making decisions affecting the parish as a whole, such as establishing priorities, setting goals, supporting ongoing ministries, and scheduling and promoting events in the life of the parish. Members, appointed by the pastor, commit to a monthly meeting, and to carrying out tasks to further the work of the council between meetings. as needed.

Finance Council
Members (by appointment) of this council oversee the financial structure of the parish. Interested parishioners may serve as non-voting members. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month.

Stewardship Committee
The stewardship committee is responsible for implementing an annual three-step plan for parish stewardship that includes the components of prayer, time & talent, and treasure. Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. A commitment of one-and-a-half hours per month for meetings is required plus additional time for development of resource materials and related follow-up activities. Eachis expected to serve a three year term.

Altar Society
Yearly membership open to all women over 18 years of age. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month, September through May, at 7:15 p.m., to share prayers and fellowship. Responsibilities/volunteer opportunities include: setting and cleaning up for Mass, caring for the linens used at Mass, providing the wine and hosts, cleaning the servers' robes, hosting the Giving Tree, coordinating funeral luncheons and selling SCRIP at masses once a month. Funeral Receptions

Hospitality for Visiting Priests
Volunteers are needed to host meals for visiting priests. When a priest is scheduled during Father Gary's absence, you will be contacted and given the opportunity to arrange for dinner on Saturday evening or Sunday lunch, either at your home or at a local restaurant. Time commitment varies.

Pro Life
There are many volunteer opportunities including: the March for Life in Washington, DC held each year on January 22nd (3 day bus trip from Belleville); donations of volunteer time and baby items for the Shawnee Crisis Pregnancy Clinic; KC-sponsored pro-life dinner held on the first Sunday in October; roses sold on Mother's Day to benefit Project Rachel, a post-abortive healing ministry; and the "cemetery" of crosses occasionally displayed in the churchyard (in need of re-painting).

Quilting Group
The quilting group meets every Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the basement of the Rectory. Everyone is welcome.

Girl Scouts
There are several troops currently meeting at Saint Andrew. Members include Saint Andrew and Saint Francis parishioners, Saint Andrew students and members of the wider community. All girls ages K-8 are welcome to join an existing troop or a new troop may be established based on age and/or number of girls interested. Meeting times vary by troop, as does time commitment. Volunteers are welcome and needed at all age levels.

Boy Scouts
There are several boy scout and cub scout troops currently meeting at Saint Andrew and the KC Hall. Members include Saint Andrew and Saint Francis parishioners, Saint Andrew School students, and members of the wider community. All boys ages 6 to 17 years are welcome to join. Meeting times vary by troop, as does time commitment. Volunteers are welcome and needed at all age levels.

Parish Quarterly Newsletter

Parish Office Helpers
Assistance is needed for various activities such as the parish newsletter, counting the Sunday offering, bulk mailings, etc. Occasionally help is also needed when large parish projects or events are planned. Time commitment depends on the activity and will be indicated when assistance is requested.

SCRIP Program
SCRIP is a program that sells gift certificates and gift cards for area businesses. The purchaser gets the full value, and the school and other parish cluster organizations designated by the purchaser get a percentage of the total back from the businesses. Volunteers are needed to sell SCRIP after weekend Masses. A time commitment of 30 minutes every one to two months is requested.

Peace Garden
This garden is being newly established at the corner of 6th and Mulberry Streets across from the church parking lot entrance. Volunteer opportunities include: donations of plants, benches and ornamentation, etc., and time for installation and upkeep. Time commitment flexible.

Parish Festival
The parish festival is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Saint Andrew School, and a fun family event for the parish and community. Volunteers are needed year-round for every aspect of planning, arranging, promoting, and organizing this major event. Time commitment flexible.

Saint Andrew Feast Day
An annual event held to celebrate the patron saint of our parish. The event has been held variously as a potluck after 10:30 Sunday Mass and a wine and cheese reception after 5:30 Saturday Mass. Volunteer opportunities range from helping to organize and host the event to helping with set-up and/or clean-up. Time commitment: several hours, once a year.

Social Outreach

Eucharist to the Homebound
Volunteers are needed to provide Communion for those who are homebound or for parishioners residing at the Rehab and Care Center or Big Muddy Apartments. Time commitment of one hour per week requested.

Lenten Simple Suppers
A simple meal of bread and soup is sponsored on each Wednesday evening during Lent, usually preceding Mass. Each meal has a guest speaker or presentation addressing an issue of social concern. Food preparers as well as speakers and other support people are needed, with a time commitment of one to two hours. Suppers will take place at Saint Andrew, Saint Francis and the Newman Center.

Thanksgiving Community Dinner
This annual dinner is held for the Murphysboro community at the KC Hall on Thanksgiving Day from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed to donate food items, to help set up the dining area, to slice turkeys, and to help with preparation and serving of food and with clean-up. Time commitment flexible. Monetary donations are also welcome and will be applied to the cost of food and supplies.

Advisory School Board
Members appointed by Father Gary and Father Bob. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month. Volunteers needed for various committees, especially concerning buildings and grounds. Time commitment varies.
